There is something special about photographing foxes.
Unlike many wildlife encounters, foxes often seem aware of your presence long before you spot them. They move quietly, appear unexpectedly and can disappear into the landscape just as quickly. It is this combination of intelligence, caution and beauty that makes every fox encounter memorable.
Recently, I spent an evening in a wildlife photography hide with the hope of photographing one of Britain's most charismatic mammals.
Patience Before Photography
Wildlife photography often involves much more waiting than photographing.
Long before the first fox appeared, the hide filled with the sounds of the surrounding countryside. Birds moved through the trees, the light gradually softened and every movement outside caught my attention.
One of the things I enjoy most about hide photography is the opportunity to slow down and simply observe the natural world. Even on days when conditions are difficult, being immersed in nature is rewarding in its own right, and on this occasion, patience would eventually be rewarded.
The Arrival
As the evening progressed, a fox emerged cautiously from the woodland edge.
For a few moments it paused, scanning its surroundings before moving forwards. This brief hesitation is typical fox behaviour. Every sense seems to be working simultaneously as they assess potential dangers and opportunities.
The warm evening light illuminated the fox's coat beautifully, revealing the rich colours and fine detail that often go unnoticed from a distance.
Capturing Character
What I enjoy most about photographing foxes is their expression.
There is an intelligence in their eyes that makes each image feel unique. While many wildlife photographs focus on action, I am often drawn to quieter moments that reveal their character and grace of movement.
This second image was one of my favourites from the evening.
The fox paused briefly and looked directly towards the camera, creating a connection that I hoped to capture in the final photograph.
For me, these are the images that tell a story; not simply showing the animal, but conveying something of its personality and presence.
